Make a ContributionToday we discuss how to name your podcast and how to craft the additional details you need when submitting to podcast directories including your category types, your podcast description, and your podcast keywords.
Steps for Skill Mastery:
We want to make sure there is no doubt in your listener’s mind that this podcast is made exactly for them and they know what to expect when they tune into your show.
We will first start with some initial keyword research to ensure the discoverability of your podcast in search engines and podcast directories. These keywords will help to craft your podcast name and other details.
Answer the following questions:
Now let’s research some of these keywords, find similar keywords, and figure out how many people are searching for your topic each month. I have shown 3 resources below using the keyword “podcast” as an example.
Resource 1: Google Trends & Google Search
When you type a keyword around your topic in google trends. you will be given the amount of people that are searching for that over time, where people are searching from, related topics (so what other things that person is searching) and related quires (so topics that relate to that keyword). This gives us insight into what people are generally looking for and how powerful a keyword is based on how many people are searching for it.
The second thing you can do with google is start typing your keyword into the search bar and see what phrases come up. These are some of the most common phrases that arise with that keyword. If you decided to use that keyword in your podcast name, make sure you are ok with that word being related to these phrases. This also gives us insight into how people are thinking about our topic and possible content we could create around it in the future. For instance, based on the above a question people might have about podcasts are how they work with Google’s services. I could create a podcast episode answering that question.
Resource 2: Ubersuggest
The next tool is ubersuggest. This will also give you a really good idea of how many people are searching for that word, how hard it would to be seen on the web using that word, topic suggestions related to that word, and even some of the top content using that word.
When you scroll to “Keyword Ideas”, the last column shows how much competition (i.e other people trying to use that keyword to get eyeballs on their content) there is for that keyword. If it is highlighted in green that means there is low competition and would be easier for you to rank for that word.
Now, on the left sidebar you will find a tab called “Keyword ideas” under “Ubersuggest”. This will give you a view of just the keyword ideas that relate to the one you searched and some other useful information about that word.
Resource 3: Answer the Public
The third resource is called Answer The Public. This resource takes the most highly searched questions around a topic and puts them in an easy to understand graphic. This is a great resource for making content, but it also lets you know what people are searching for in relation to that topic. It gives you data about the keyword topic on questions, prepositions, comparisons, and related topics.
Now that we have some places to get good data and have an idea of what words our ideal avatar likes to use, let’s record some of the top ones we might like to have in our name.
Answer the following questions after researching keywords using the previous resources.
Now let’s start brainstorming some ideas for your podcast name & details using these keywords.
The name of your podcast is the first line of representing what your podcast is all about in order to attract your ideal listener. When deciding your podcast name, always keep in mind to make your podcast CLEAR first and CLEVER second.
Brainstorm 5-10 names for your podcast, including keywords if applicable.
Be sure to listen to today’s audio for some helpful advice when thinking about your podcast name. I cover 5 tips when naming your podcast:
Put the names you brainstormed through the following checklist:
If your name idea passes the checklist then it is viable name for your podcast. It's now time to decide a name!
The name of my podcast will be...
Once you decide your name it would be smart to:
When submitting your podcast to the various directories such as iTunes, Spotify, & Google Play, there are a few extra details you will need which we will take care of today.
The first is deciding which categories your podcast fits into. These are broad topic categories such as health & fitness, entrepreneurship, or relationships for example. You will choose 3 categories that your podcast most fits into. The first category that you pick is the most important one as this is what your show will be most associated with.
You can see a list of the categories on iTunes.
When deciding your podcast categories, always keep in mind:
The last one is a crucial point for discoverability. Below is a graph of the (old) categories with the highest saturation of podcast competition (which can also be viewed here).
As you can see some popular categories that you may be putting your podcast into are health or business. If you choose one of those it may directly relate to your topic but also has lots of other podcasts competing to be the top listened podcast in that category. So it is actually better to choose categories that loosely align with your topic.
At the end of the day, don’t overthink it too much. It just adds a slight advantage to be positioned in better categories for discoverability. Write below the three categories your podcast will be in
Choose the 3 categories your podcast will be in when submitting to podcast directories.
Feel free to change your categories in the future. You are not locked into this decision forever.
Next we will write out the description for your podcast. This is the small blurb that shows up next to your podcast when being searched in directories such as itunes. Here you want to be descriptive in telling your audience what the show is all about and what benefit they will receive by listening.
The best way to get started writing this is by looking at the descriptions of the podcasts you researched before and seeing how they are written and what they include. Also be sure to include keywords or jargon that your ideal avatar resonates with.
Write down the description for your podcast.
Again you are free to change this in the future.
Demonstrate mastery of the knowledge and skills presented in this lesson by applying it to the above activity. If, and only if, you have a full understanding and have mastered the knowledge and skills presented in this lesson, select the next lesson in the navigation.
