How to Start a Podcast

Day 16: Creating a Content Bank

No items found.

Today we discuss what a content bank is, why you should have one, and how many episodes you need to launch your podcast with.

Steps for Skill Mastery:

  1. Start your content bank
  2. Schedule ongoing content creation

Step 1: Start Your Content Bank

Today we are going to start our podcast content bank. Think of this like a bank account, where you create content to “deposit” and then “withdraw” content to publish based on your podcast frequency. Just like with a real bank account, you want to have a surplus of deposits in the bank at all times, meaning you have more content in the bank than you are taking out to publish

The power of having a content bank allows you to:

  • Be a few weeks ahead of your publish dates
  • Have room for travelling or emergencies when you can’t create content
  • Prepare for slow times when you can’t book guests or think of new content
  • Never feel rushed to put out subpar content

We will begin our content bank by creating out first 3-5 episodes which we will use during our launch of the podcast.

Based on your podcast’s flow’s, outlines, goals, and checklists, record your first 3-5 episodes. Use the outline below to help guide you.

Note: If you are doing interviews we will cover this later this week. However the ideas behind the content bank still apply.

Activity: Create Episodes for Your Bank

Following the same steps you did yesterday, create outlines for 3-5 episodes that you can begin to fill your content bank with. Then record these episodes so they are ready for editing. Some things to keep in mind are:

  • Episode Title
  • Episode Description
  • Flow of the show
  • Your episode content outline
  • Your episode goal
  • Your recording checklist (so you don't forget any steps)

We will edit these 3-5 episodes later so they are ready for launch!

Step 2: Schedule Ongoing Content Creation

Now that you have your first 3-5 episodes created, let’s think about when you can set time aside to start depositing more content into your bank. Consider batch creating content (creating 2 or more episodes on the same day) and the amount of time it takes to create and edit each episode. Then choose a few times during the week, schedule it on your calendar, and stick to it!

Activity: Scheduling

Return to your calendar from Day 3 of commitments you have and schedule you created for podcasting. Time block your week with times you can create and edit content.  If you already have a time blocking or calendar system, please use that. If not, you may copy & use the google sheet template to time block

Continue to get in the habit of regularly depositing content in your bank as you publish your episodes. This will keep you ahead of ongoing publishing as a podcaster.
