How to Start a Podcast

Day 17: Recording Episode 0 & Trailer

No items found.

Today we discuss how to create your introductory episode of your podcast, what to include, and when it's time to update your intro episode.

Steps for Skill Mastery:

  1. Create your episode 0
  2. Create your podcast trailer

Step 1: Create Your Episode 0

One of the most important episodes of your podcast is Episode 000. This sets the stage and tone for your podcast and will be one of the most listened to episodes.

The reason is because if someone new finds your podcast and wants to know if it is for them, they’ll look for the first episode expecting to find out what to expect on the show and who the hosts are.

So Episode 0 really gives your listeners the rundown of who, what, when, where, and why of your podcast.

Below is a loose outline you can follow, but remember this is YOUR show – be unique, add your flair, and make your podcast guest feel welcome!

Sample Episode 0 Outline:

About Me (typically 2-3 minutes):

  • Introduce yourself – tell them a little about you, share a little bit of your story, start connecting with your audience.
  • Explain why you started your podcast! Share your excitement to be on this journey with them.

What your podcast will be about? (typically 3-4 minutes):

  • What will your listener get by tuning in every week?
  • Share the vision and direction of your podcast so your listeners know whether or not it’s for them
  • Ask for feedback and let your listeners know you welcome engagement

Frequency (typically 1-2 minutes):

  • Explain what frequency your listeners can expect going forward and if there is anything special about your “launch period” (For example, I’m launching with 3 episodes, then plan to go to 2x per week, or whatever that might be…)

Activity: Create Your Episode 0

Use the outline above or your own to create an introductory episode 0 for your podcast. Then record your episode 0.

Should you ever update Episode 000? Absolutely! If you ever change the format, frequency, or direction of your podcast, update your Episode 000 so those tuning in knows what to expect.

Step 2: Create a Trailer

Some platform's like Spotify allow you to place a short trailer episode at the top of your feed like the picture below.

Your trailer is an elevator pitch to potential podcast listeners and new audiences for your show, so you need to make sure it covers your show’s tone and format and gives people a good idea of what to expect from each podcast episode.

Activity: Create Your Trailer

Record a short 1-2 minute trailer for your podcast

These items will help with promoting your podcast when we move into launching it.
