Day 40: Tracking Your Stats

No items found.

Today we discuss which stats and metrics you should be tracking for your podcast, what the industry typically tracks, where you can find these stats, and how these all relate to the goals for your podcast.

Steps for Skill Mastery:

  1. Evaluate your goals before deciding which stats to track
  2. Choose which stats will be most effective for tracking
  3. Locate places for tracking

Step 1: Evaluate Your Goals

If you are going to pour the amount of work necessary into creating a podcast, you will want to measure its success — but how?

First we have to evaluate what success looks like to us before we can decide which metrics and stats to be tracking. Go back to the previous lessons and look over the goals you had set for yourself for the podcast. These will help you determine what success looks like for you.

Activity: Reflect

Answer the following questions for yourself:

  • The goal of my podcast is...
  • Success for my podcast looks like...

Now that you know what you are aiming for we can choose the right numbers to look at to measure if you are reaching that goal.

Step 2:Track the Right Metrics

Below are a few metrics you could use to track your success.

  • Podcast ranking
  • Total Downloads Over Time
  • Monthly/Daily Downloads
  • Downloads by Episode
  • Platform Downloads
  • Rates & Reviews
  • Social Media Following
  • Podcast Website Traffic
  • Email Subscribers
  • Customers
  • Network connections made

Below are few videos to help you determine the right metrics to track and possible benchmarks for those.

Activity: Choose Metrics

Based on the goals of your podcast, choose the metrics that are right for you.

After you have chosen the correct metrics for yourself you will need to locate places you can track these numbers.

Step 3: Locate Places for Tracking

The first place to look is the analytics dashboard inside your podcast media host. Almost every media host comes with a dashboard of charts and graphs tracking things like:

  • Top episodes
  • Listening apps
  • Countries & geographic location
  • Most popular time of day
  • Unique number of listeners

Below are two examples from Transitor and Simplecast.

Activity: Locate Analytics

Locate the analytic dashboard inside your podcast media host and get acquainted with it's metrics.

There are also other popular tracking websites such as Podtrac & Chartable which allow you to have more analytics at your disposal.

Activity: Setup Advanced Tracking

Setup a chartable account to start tracking some advanced metrics for your podcast.

Additionally, you can track on just specific platforms like Apple podcasts or Spotify, the two dominant podcast platforms.

Activity: Locate Analytics

Locate the analytic dashboard inside Apple podcasts and Spotify.

Now you are all ready to track if the marketing tactics we cover are actually helping your podcast to grow.
