Make a ContributionToday we discuss how to create a successful launch strategy for your podcast, why you need one, how to choose a launch date, understanding the iTunes algorithm, why you need a podcast launch team, and how to set goals for your podcast launch.
Steps for Skill Mastery:
Having a launch strategy in place is crucial to ensure all the time researching, finding guests, writing episode outlines, recording, editing, the list goes on, does not fall on deaf ears. You must have an actual strategy to ensure you get the most visibility possible during the first week of your podcast.
Today we will review a few strategies and things you need to plan to help you crush your launch!
First, we will pick an actual date for the launch of our podcast. Before you pick a date, consider all the items you need to accomplish before launching and how long each of those items take. Then choose a date that will allow you to finish those items before launching. If you have been following along in the course, then you should be ready for launch within a couple weeks.
Below is a sample Launch Checklist of items you will need. I recommend writing down the time you will need to complete each item to help you decide on when to launch.
Choose a date for when you would like to launch your podcast. Keep in mind the amount of time you need for completing each of the steps before launch.
Now that you have chosen your date, you need to make sure you have to right amount of episodes to launch with and which days those episodes will come out during launch week.
I recommend launching with 3-5 episodes (listen to today’s audio for more explanation on this).
If you are launching with 3 episodes this could include:
If you are launching with 5 episodes this could include:
Now you have a couple options of how you would like your podcast episodes to come out during your launch week.
Option one is that you release an episode starting Monday and then release the other two on Wednesday and Friday as follows:
Another option is to release episode 0 a week early as a “trailer episode” to serve as a placeholder when you go to submit your podcast to the various distribution platforms, such as Apple Podcasts, Google, Spotify, etc. Then during launch week you release episodes over your chosen days, for example:
Below, decide how many episodes you will launch with and when you will be releasing those episodes during the week.
Decide how many episodes you will launch with and when you will be releasing those episodes during the week.
Now let’s help boost the chances of your podcast being heard during that first week.
We are going to create a launch team for your podcast. This is a group of friends, family, colleagues, and people in your existing network that would gladly help spread the word about your new podcast leading up to and on the day it launches.
You can ask these people to help promote, to listen to your podcast, and to leave you subscribes, ratings, and reviews. All of these will be greatly beneficial to your podcast success during launch.
Brainstorm at least 10 people who could be on your launch team and start reaching out to them to ask for their help.
Now let’s brainstorm the things you will be promoting during your podcast launch to ensure its success
You don’t just promote your podcast overnight, it takes consistent promotion over time in order for it to gain momentum and really stick.
It takes at least 7 touches of awareness before someone really interacts with you or your brand, so we need to consistently keep letting people know we are launching a podcast if we want listeners during our first week.
To help spread the word about your podcast, below are some ideas of things you could do to start building hype.
These items might include:
Below, create a marketing plan you can execute on with specific items, platforms, and days you will be doing the promotion on.
Brainstorm what ideas you would like to do for your podcast launch and schedule time to complete those items.
Last but not least, it’s important that you set goals for you launch and beyond so that you can measure your own success with your podcast.
Ask yourself what a GREAT launch would look and feel like to you.
Your goals should be what YOU consider a win, not what others say you should be doing.
Write what your podcast will look and feel like during launch, 1 month from now, 3 months from now, and 6 months from now.
Now you are ready to start getting your podcast out to the world.
Demonstrate mastery of the knowledge and skills presented in this lesson by applying it to the above activity. If, and only if, you have a full understanding and have mastered the knowledge and skills presented in this lesson, select the next lesson in the navigation.
