How to Start a Podcast

Day 58: Monetizing with Products & Services 3

No items found.

Today we're going to go over how you can create products and services to monetize your podcast, covering creating and selling.

Steps for Skill Mastery:

  1. Pre-sell your product
  2. Create and deliver your product

Step 1: Pre-sell Your Product

Pre-selling your product ensures people actually want to buy it before you create it!

Activity: Pre-sell Your Product

Try preselling your product and getting confirmed buyers.

If people are buying it, then it is time to create and deliver it to them!

Step 2: Create Your Product

Let’s start by defining the project we have before us. Having an overall understanding of the project itself, along with your end goal clearly in mind is important because you want to know that all of your hard work can be tracked.

Activity: Reflect

Answer the following questions:

  • What’s the product or service I am creating?
  • Why am I creating this product or service for my audience?
  • What is your end goal?

Now define the pieces of the product or service you must create. Look at creating your product or service as a puzzle that is broken up into several smaller pieces to be completed in progressive stages.

Activity: Reflect

What are the pieces of my product or service that I need to create? (Look back at your outline from before for help).

Now that you know what needs to be created, identify any of them that require you to be dependent on someone else to complete. Identifying any dependencies will help prevent you from being half way through creating your product and then realizing you were supposed to take an extra step way back at the beginning in order to bring it all together.

Activity: Reflect

What pieces require outside support or being dependent on outside sources to create?

As you begin the process of creating your product or service, keep track of your progress towards completion. Measuring your progress within each stage of creating your product or service helps you stay very aware of what’s working (and what’s not working) with your plan. Make sure you’re checking in with yourself and your team (if applicable) to ensure you’re on track.

I recommend going back to the list above of each of your pieces and placing a deadline next to it. Then write some ways you can track progress towards those deadlines.

If you run into a stage in creating your product or service that requires expertise you simply do not have, then ask for help. Depending on the task, there are several online resources that can help you with finding virtual assistants who are experts and who can help you remotely.
